Tim Sears Jr. disqualified from Gnome Cup for non-conforming seals, engine tear-down/inspection identifies no additional discrepancies
May 20, 2014 During post-race inspection following Sunday night’s “Gnome Cup” Go Nuclear Late Model Series event at Utica-Rome Speedway, series tech officials identified a discrepant seal configuration, with two engine-builder seals in place (incomplete) and nominal GM bolts in other required locations. A follow-up with the car owner, as well as the engine builder who’s seals were on the engine, provided confirmation that the original builder’s seals had been removed in order to facilitate a repair by a non-authorized rebuilder. As a result of the non-conforming seals, Tim Sears Jr. was disqualified from the Gnome Cup Event. In order to determine the extent of the penalties to be imposed, the series elected to have the engine torn down and inspected by a certified and bonded NeSmith Series engine rebuilder. The inspection identified no discrepancies within the engine. All parameters/parts were confirmed to be within specification. Therefore, there will be no additional suspension. Said series promoter Shayne Tenace, “while the results of the inspection confirmed that all internal parts are within specifications, it is critical that the integrity of the seal program be maintained. Non-authorized repairs simply cannot be allowed, nor can fake bolts be tolerated. With that being said, I would like to thank Larry Wight for his candor during this process as the inspection confirms what he told us.” The Go Nuclear! Late Model Series official rulebook is being updated to provide additional clarification regarding requirements for incomplete seal packages and additional penalties for non-conforming seal bolts.
