PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO… Mikey Kruchka from Hamilton, Ontario was the winner of the Southern Onatrio Sprints (SOS) A-Main on John Puhl Memorial Night presented by Zanchin Truck &Trailer and Motorsports Image at the New Humberstone Speedway. Other winners on Victoria Day weekend included Adam Leslie from Port Colborne, Ontario picking up the win in the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman. “The Fonz” Jason Fontaine from Port Colborne, Ontario took top honors in the JC Auto Street Stocks for the second time this season. Evan Curtis from Wainfleet, Ontario picked up the victory in the TC Decals Mini Stocks for his first of the season. Colton Ledingham from Port Colborne, Ontario picked up his first win of the season for the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks.
Brad Lodge and Justin Martin led the Southern Ontario Sprints to the green flag for their main event with Martin leading the opening circuits. Jamie Turner moved into second with Paige Polyak, Lodge and Adam West in the top five early on. Mikey Kruchka was on the move and moved into fourth place with Glenn Styres moving into five by lap five. Polyak passed Turner for second and began her chase of race leader Justin Martin. The battle was on for third as Turner was holding off Kruchka and Styres but Kruchka, racing his Big Moose Racing 01 entry moved into third by the races halfway mark.
Kruchka went underneath Polyak on lap 16 and moved into second place. Martin was out front and spun on the front stretch to bring out the races first caution on lap 17 after contact with a lapped racer. On the restart, Kruchka pulled away but Styres was on the rear nerf bar of Kruchka but Kruchka picked up the win. Styres, Polyak, Steele and Chris Jones completed the top five.
2012 Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Champion Cody McPherson and Matt Sharpe led the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman to the green flag for their feature event and it was McPherson leading the opening lap. Ryan Turner went off the track and landed in the gulch off of corner four to bring out the races first caution on lap two. The restart saw McPherson and Adam Leslie show the way and Leslie was able to take the lead away from McPherson on lap three. With Leslie showing the way, the battle was on for fourth place by the midway point as Brad Rouse, Jason Moore and Gary Lindberg battled for that position with Rouse and Lindberg moving into the top five. After a mid-race caution, Brad Rouse moved into third as Cody McPherson regained the lead by a front nerf bar by lap 14. Leslie regained the lead on lap 15 as Gary Lindberg went to the outside of Brad Rouse and took over third on lap 18. Lindberg passed McPherson for second as Adam Leslie scored the win. Rouse and Matt Sharpe completed the top five.
Mike Greene and qualifying winner Wyatt VanWart led the JC Auto Street Stocks to the green flag and it was Jason Fontaine taking the lead on the opening go around. With “The Fonz” showing the way, Paul Reichel raced his way into second with Bryce Richardson racing in third as Greene and Jim Lampman racing in the top five. Marcel Beauregard spun in turn two to slow the field down for the first time on lap four. On the restart, Fontaine and Reichel continued to show the way as divisional rookie Kyle Pelrine and Mike Greene came together with Mason Smith causing the field to slow down again. James Thompson was on the move at the races halfway point as he took over second from Reichel on lap 11 and got loose and spun just one lap later. Jason Fontaine was able to hold off Reichel to pick up the victory. Jim Lampman, Thompson and Bryce Richardson completed the top five.
Evan Curtis and Katie Cosco were on the front row for the TC Decals Mini Stocks feature and Curtis went into turn one with the race lead. Curtis continued to show the way with Kyle Rothwell racing in second and Dillan Sliter racing in third at the races halfway point. Rothwell was reeling in Curtis when the leaders hit lap traffic with five laps remaining. Curtis was able to hold off the hard charging Rothwell for the win. Sliter came home in third and it was Buscumb and Brandon Iudiciani completed the top five. In post race tech, Rothwell was found to be illegal.
Taylor Vanderzanden and Adam Nicholls led the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks to the green flag for their feature event and it was Nicholls taking over the lead on the first lap. Colton Ledingham went three wide with the front row and Ledingham took over the lead on lap two with Danny Wurster racing into second. Ledingham and Wurster continued to show the way with Vanderzanden and Sam Pennacchio racing in top four at the cross flags. Ledingham was able to pull away from the rest of the field and went on to pick up his first victory of the season. Wurster, Pennacchio, Vanderzandzen and Frank Perry completed the top five.
Port Notes: The Humberstone Speedway would like to send their condolences to the Hockridge family on the loss of Nancy. Also the Speedway would like to send best wishes to Sprint competitor Jamie Collard. Collard was involved in a violent accident at the Selinsgrove Speedway in Pennsylvania over the weekend. Car Count Report for 5-18: SOS Sprints – 27, DIRTcar Sportsman – 20, Street Stocks – 19, Mini Stocks – 12, Pro 4 Trucks – 11 for a total of 89 racers. The entire racing program including the Victoria Day Fireworks presented by Redboss Pyrotechnics were completed by 10:00 PM. The Cosco Haulage RUSH Late Models had the evening off.
The first month of the 2014 racing season will come to a conclusion with a full card of racing plus an Eve of Destruction Flag Pole Race. Gates will be opening at 4:00pm with the racing action kicking off at 6:00pm sharp.
