PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO… Gary Lindberg from Ridgeway, Ontario returned to victory lane for the first time in 2014 after crossing the finish line first in the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman on Port Cares Night at the New Humberstone Speedway. Veteran Late Model racer Ed Carley from Freedom, NY picked up his first victory of the season in the Cosco Haulage RUSH Late Models. 2013 track Champion James Thompson from St. Catharines, Ontario claimed the victory for the JC Auto Street Stocks. Dillan Sliter from Port Colborne, Ontario picked up his first TC Decals Mini Stocks feature of the season. Sam Pennacchio from Niagara Falls, Ontario picked up his second straight Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Truck feature of the season. Tim Zack from Dain City, Ontario picked up the Vintage Cars feature.
Jason Moore and 2012 Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman titlist Cody McPherson led the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman to the green flag and it was Moore showing the way early. Matt Sharpe spun to bring out the races first caution on lap four just as Cody McPherson took over the race lead. On the restart, McPherson was able to pull away with defending track champion Gary Lindberg moved into second. The two pulled away just as James Michael Friesen, AJ Lewis, Robert Baker, Brian Schmidt and Derek Borkenhagen came together in turn one. On the restart, Lindberg took over the lead with McPherson, Adam Leslie, Jason Moore and Austin Wood racing in the top five. Wood came to a stop on lap 14 in turn two to bring out the caution. On the restart, it was Lindberg once again pulling away and Adam Leslie got to the outside of McPherson for second just as the field was slowed down once again. The lap 17 restart saw Lindberg and McPherson pulled away from the field. Lindberg would go on to cross the line first over McPherson with Leslie, Moore and Jeff Armstrong completing the top five. The race is unofficial pending tech.
“The Roadrunner” Rob Ledingham and Paul Grigsby led the Cosco Haulage RUSH Late Models to the green flag and it was the “Roadrunner” leading the opening lap. Starting third on the grid, qualifying event winner Ed Carley passed Ledingham for the lead on lap two. The battle was on for second as Zack Carley and Paul Grigsby were challenging Ledingham for the runner up spot. Zack Carley cleared Ledingham for second and was trying to reel in his father and race leader Ed Carley. Paul Grigsby was able to split up the Carley family one-two as he passed Zack for second in the late going as Ed Carley cruised to the win. Grigsby, Zack Carley, Rob Ledingham and Jorden Peters completed the top five.
James Thompson and Jim Lampman were on the front row for the JC Auto Street Stocks to the green flag and it was Thompson leading the way early on. Chris Crawford passed Lampman for second early on. After a couple of early cautions, Steve Robison spun in turn four and drove right in front of the field and both Jim Lampman and Roy Crawford had no where to go and got collected and had hard contact with the Robison racer. All drivers were alright at the scene. On the restart, Thompson continued to show the way over Crawford and Paul Reichel in the top three as Opening Night feature winner Jason Fontaine and Billy Bleich Jr raced in the top five. Fontaine wasted no time to pass Reichel and Crawford to move into second and began to chase down race leader James Thompson. Thompson would hold off Fontaine for the win the Reichel, Billy Bleich Jr and Chris Crawford completed the top five.
Brandon Iudiciani and Sam Iftody led the TC Decals Mini Stocks to the green flag with fourth place starter Dillan Sliter quickly taking over the lead at the end of lap one. Kyle Rothwell quickly reeled in Sliter and began his chase to take over the race lead from Sliter. With Sliter and Rothwell pulling away from the field, Sam Iftody was leading a three car battle with Leroy Buscumb and Evan Curtis for third place for the entire 15 lap distance. Leroy Buscumb spun in turn four on lap 14 to slow the field down for the first time on the evening. With the Buscumb spin, it set up a one lap shootout and Rothwell went underneath Sliter on the backstretch and when they got back to the line it was Sliter over Rothwell with Curtis, Iftody and Iudiciani completing the top five.
Adam Nicholls and Colton Ledingham led the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks to the green flag for their feature event and it was Nicholls showing the way early from his pole position. After trying to lap a slower truck, Nicholls made contact and lost the lead to Sam Pennacchio. Pennacchio led Nicholls at the cross flags with Colton Ledingham and Danny Wurster racing in the top four with Frank Berry, making his first career start in the division racing in fifth. Pennacchio would go on to the win with Ledingham, Wurster, Berry and Taylor Vanderzanden completing the top five.
Tim Zack and Conrad Baker led the Vintage Cars to the green flag for their feature event and it was Tim Zack showing the way. Brian Page worked his way quickly from his third row starting spot to move into second early and began to reel in the leader. Zack would hold off Page to pick up the victory.
Port Notes: Chad Brown had a career best second place run in his qualifying heat for the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman. Tom Strong ousted three other competitors to take home the spectator one on one races. Car Count Report for May 11th: DIRTcar Sportsman – 24, RUSH Late Models – 12, Street Stocks – 18, Mini Stocks – 13, Pro 4 Trucks – 8, Vintage Cars – 9 for a total of 85 cars pitside. The race program was completed by 9:30pm.
Zankin Truck & Trailer with Motorsports Image will be presenting the Southern Ontario Sprints as they make their return to the New Humberstone Speedway on Sunday May 18th. The DIRTcar Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and Pro 4 Trucks will all be on the racing card. Post race fireworks will complete the Victoria Day Weekend racing program. Gates will be opening at 4:00pm with the racing action kicking off at 6:00pm sharp.
