After rain postponed the Ontario Topless Sprints/Can Am Sprint Car Challenge Series event at Humberstone Speedway earlier this year, a raindate finally came available for this past Sunday night. 14 wingless sprint cars were on hand for an electrifying event at Port Colbourne, Ontario’s Humberstone Speedway.
The night started with an early scare as Gord Bennett destroyed his racecar in a horrific crash early in his qualifying heat race. Gord walked away uninjured, but the car and major damage and he was done for the night. Stan Zanchin and Joey Irwin won the qualifying events. Warren Mahoney jumped out to the early lead in the 25 lap event after starting on the front row along side Mike Stelter. Current OTS point leader John Watson took over the top spot on lap three, as Mahoney and Chris Durand battled for the second position. A lap nine restart produced some terrific racing as Mahoney used a brilliant move to get around Watson for the lead, and just one lap later Watson made a similar move to regain the lead. The following lap, Mahoney regained the lead, and Durand followed to take over the second position as Watson fell to third. Mahoney held on for the win as Joey Irwin and Jesse Costa closed in during the closing laps of the race.
After three events, John Watson is the current point leader with a slim six point lead over Joey Irwin, while Warren Mahoney, Dick Mahoney and Chris Durand round out the top five. The next race in the Ontario Topless Sprints/Can Am Sprint Car Challenge Series will be back at Tri-City Speedway this coming Friday, August 16th.
