Mother Nature Loses Again as Panunte, Peters, Fontaine, Sleight, Pietz and Rothwell All Make Trips to Victory Lane.
Port Colborne,ON by Les Mawson(email@example.com)
As other tracks in the area had called their shows earlier in the day, the New Humberstone Speedway was lucky and got the show in without a rain drop. And many thanks to Jeff Armstrong of Tidyman Maintenence and Julie Puchalski of Port Colborne Laundry for sponsoring tonight’s races.
COSCO HAULAGE DIRTcar Sportsmen: Starting on the pole was the rookie Chris Bellamy with tonight’s sponsor Jeff Armstrong along side of him and on the drop of the green flags from starter John Veach, Armstrong grabbed the early lead in turn two and held it for the first two laps until the first caution came out for B J Willard and Adam Hilton who got hooked together coming out of turn two. This put “The High Plains Drifter” Gary Lindberg right beside Armstrong on the restart and he wasted no time in getting around Armstrong and taking the point for the next five laps, but lurking in the shadows was Greg Panunte and after another two cautions, was beside Lindberg for the lap eight restart. Panunte outraced Lindberg going into turn one on lap nine and then proceeded to hold off all comers, surviving another two caution periods, including the last one on lap twenty for a wreck involving Dave Flannigan Jr and Gregg Rauscher. This ended Rauscher’s night and set up a five lap “dash for cash”. Panunte was not to be denied, though and held the point to the end taking his fourth win of 2012. Lindberg was second with Brad Rouse charging through the field to come in third. Fourth was Cody Macpherson and fifth was Austin Wood. Heat winners were Lindberg, Wood and Joey Mastroianni.
PETERS EXCAVATING FASTRAK Late Models: On the front row was the veteran Kenny Winfield sharing it with Tim Gillespie and on the start, it was Gillespie taking the early lead and holding it for the first six laps until the first caution flag for a spin by Adam Ferri. Unfortunately for Gillespie, that put Darren”the Digger” Peters along side him on the restart and after two tries to get the race back underway, Peters was able to use the low side to his advantage to get around Gillespie to take the lead and ultimately his seventh win. Coming back through the pack to finish second was Ferri with Jorden Peters third. Holding onto fourth was Gillespie with Zack Carley fifth. Heat winners were Don Speice and Ferri.
J C AUTO Street Stocks: With Ohsweken Speedway rained out, a few of their regulars decided to come out and play with us for a change. Starting on the pole was Port Colborne’s own Dave Bitner Jr. with Stevensville’s Jordan Fidler along side of him. On the start, Bitner, who’s been showing a lot of speed the past few weeks, was able to grab the point coming out of turn two and held it for the first six laps until a spin by Fidler slowed the field. This put Jason Fontaine beside Bitner for the restart and on the green, “the Fonz” wasted no time in getting around Bitner for the lead. Fontaine then had to hold off a very determined Kevin Knapp, who also got around Bitner. Knapp tried just about everything shy of the famous bump and run to get around Fontaine but Fontaine was not to be deined and took his second win of 2012. A little bit of excitement on lap eleven when coming out of turn two, Chris Duchesne had a fire under the hood of the 22MX. He was able to coast into the infield and have the CAA crew put the fire out without bringing out the caution. The top five were Fontaine, Knapp Bitner, Shawn Wilson and Steve Robison. Heat winners were Bitner and Wilson.
NIAGARA AUTO SALES Pro 4 Trucks: Starting on the front row was a pair of third generation drivers, Colton Ledingham and Taylor Vanderzanden and on the drop of the green it was Vanderzanden with the early lead as Ledingham didn’t come up to speed right away. Vanderzanden only had the point for the first lap as Lee Sleight was able to get around Ledingham and then pass Vanderzanden in turn four. Sleight was then able to hold off all comers to take his third win of 2012, survivng the only caution of the run, when Adam Williams spun in turn four and with nowhere to go, Andy Imbeault gently ran into the front of him. Vanderzanden held onto second over Mike Toovey with Adam Nicholls fourth and Greg Haegens fifth. Heat winners were Sleight and Ledingham.
WEEKEND MOTORSPORTS Mini Stocks: Starting on the front row was Greg Wilson with former Sprint car racer Jason Pietz along side of him. On the drop of the green flags, it was Pietz taking the lead coming out of turn two, a lead that he would not relinquish, holding off all comers. Evan Curtis and Aaron Wiley were having their own battle behind the leader and since neither of them could get past the other, Pietz was able to drive on to his first win of 2012. It was a very happy Victory Lane afterwards with car owner Rob Overholt almost as happy as Pietz was. The top five were Pietz, Curtis, Wiley, Brandon Iudiciani and Kyle Pelrine. Heat winners were Pietz and Curtis.
FRONTIER AUTO DISMANTLERS Pure Stocks: Starting on the front row was Kyle Tomaski and former points champion Mike Greene and on the start,Tomaski took the early lead for the first lap until Brad”the Hammer” Booker took it from him on lap two. Tomaski would return the favour three laps later on lap six and hold it for the next five laps. Kyle Rothwell joined the fray on lap nine and it was the “Kyle and Kyle Show” for the next five laps. Rothwell took the lead on lap twelve from Tomaski and the two Kyles had a good battle until the last lap when Tomaski went too high in turns one and two, losing about six spots. This put Sam Iftody in second but not for long as he spun in turn four! In the space of a lap, Booker went from fourth to second without having to work for it! At the finish it was Rothwell picking up his third win of 2012, also solidifying his point lead, Booker was second, Mason Smith was third. Fourth was Jackie Giancola with Billy Smith coming back from losing a wheel to finish fifth. Billy Smith was lucky when he lost his right rear wheel as just as it happened, Brad Alward, whose engine was smoking heavily for two laps prior, had an engine fire bringing out a caution. That allowed Smith to get his wheel changed without losing a lap. Heat winners were Tomaski and Iftody.
EVE OF DESTRUCTION Enduro Qualifier was won by Justin Desmarais after thirty laps. The top five were Desmarais, Justin Mathes, Jimmie Richard, Tim Notley and Brad McCarten.
