Port Colborne,ON by Les Mawson(email@example.com) With other tracks in the surrounding area having to cancel due to rain, Mother Nature looked kindly on us and let us race! With the rain and expert track preparation, the racing surface was the best it’s been all season!
COSCO HULAGE DIRTcar Sportsman: Starting on the front row was the rookie Travis Miller with Gregg Rauscher along side of him and on the drop of the green flags from starter John Veach, Miller grabbed the early lead coming off of turn two and then held it for the first five laps with another youngster, Matt Sharpe, right behind him. On lap six, sharpe was able to get around Miller and take his turn on the point for three laps until the first caution flag came out for a spin by Chris Bellamy in turn one. This was not what Sharpe wanted to see as it put Cody Mcpherson beside him on the restart. On the first crack, Sharpe was able to hold off Mcpherson but a slowing Gary Lindberg in turn four brought out caution number two before the lap was completed. On this restart, Mcpherson had a better jump along with Adam Leslie, who was in third, and coming across the start-finish line, it was three wide across the stripe! Mcpherson was the better of the three and then was able to hold off all comers to the finish, surviving another caution on lap 13 and one on lap 22 for a scary looking crash involving Nick Cupolo, out for the first time this year, Darrell Farraway and Robert Baker. All were able to continue after quick pitstops. At the finish it was Mcpherson picking up his third win of 2012, Leslie was second and Greg Panunte was third. Fourth was Mark Chiddy with Brad Rouse fifth. Heat winners were Mcpherson, Lindberg and Panunte.
PETERS EXCAVATING FASTRAK Late Models: On the pole once again was the veteran Kenny Winfield with Zack Carley along side and on the green flag, it was Winfield with the early lead coming out of turn two, but it was Carley with the lead coming across the start-finish line to complete lap one. The first yellow flag flew just after that for collisions all over the speedway as we had Bill Gill and Paul Milligan coming together on the front stretch and Adam Ferri and Darren Peters together in turn one. Only Milligan was unable to continue. On the restart, coming through turn four on lap 2, Carley got out of shape and spun in front of the entire field, collecting his father, Ed Carley, Peters, Adam Ferri and, making his return to racing after many years away from the speedway, Dean Ferri. Ed Carley and Dean Ferri were unable to continue, with Adam Ferri having to make a long pitstop to repair his car. After a lengthy clean-up, the race resumed only to have another yellow for a meeting with the inside wall by Tim Gillespie in turn one. Gillespie was able to continue and that was the last caution of the race. Darren Peters was able to take the lead from his son Jorden on the restart for Gillespie and was not headed after that. At the finish, it was Darren picking up his sixth win of 2012, Zack Carley came back to finish second and extending his points lead with third place was Jorden Peters. Fourth was Paul Grigsby and Gillespie was fifth. Heat winners were Ed Carley and Gillespie.
J C AUTO Street Stocks: Starting on the pole was Jordan Fidler with the veteran Barry Blanchard along side and it was Fidler grabbing the early lead coming off of turn two and then holding it for the first two laps. On lap two, Paul Reichel was able to make his way around Blanchard and take the lead on lap three. Meanwhile, back in the pack, making only his third appearance of 2012 and his second in a borrowed car, Billy Bleich Jr was making a run to the front in Kenny Sargent’s usual ride, picking off cars at the rate of one a lap. Bleich was finally able to take the lead from Reichel on lap 17 and hold it the rest of the way. At the finish,it was the orange 25 in victory lane for the fourth time this year but with Bleich at the controls, Reichel held on for second and Jason Fontaine was third. Fourth was Chris Duchesne and Blanchard was fifth. Heat winners were Fidler and Fontaine.
NIAGARA AUTO SALES Pro 4 Trucks On the pole was third generation driver Taylor Vanderzanden with Danny Wurster on the outside and on the green, Wurster would grab the early lead and hold it for the first five laps until the first yellow flag for a stopped Colton Ledingham in turn two. On the restart, Greg Haegens would take the lead and hold off all comers for the rest of the run. There would be another caution on lap 10 for Vanderzanden who had a flat tire on the backstretch, setting up a battle between Haegens and Lee Sleight for the last five laps with Sleight only getting as close as Haegens’ driver’s side door. At the finish, it was Haegens getting his second win of 2012, Sleight was second with Mike Toovey third, extending his points lead. Fourth was Hilary Haegens with Adam Nicholls fifth. Heat winners were Greg Haegens and Vanderzanden.
WEEKEND MOTORSPORTS Mini Stocks Starting on the pole was Jay Pietz with Greg Wilson on the outside and on the drop of the green flags, Pietz grabbed the early lead and held it for the first four laps. Pietz was being chased by Kyle Pelrine and on lap five, Pelrine would take the lead.Leading the first four laps would be the high-light of Pietz’s run as he and his team mate Rob Overholt would come together in turn two on lap 10, sending Overholt to the pits and Pietz to the tail of the field. There was no caution for this however as Overholt was able to get off the track right away. There was a caution soon after that though for Ron Loggie on lap 12 as he had front suspension problems as he exited turn two. This set up a three lap “dash for cash” between Pelrine and Brandon Iudiciani, who had been lurking behind Pelrine all race long, but Pelrine was able to hold him off and take his second win of 2012 and also extend his large points lead. Iudiciani was second with Garnet Wilson third. Fourth was Jocelyne Wiley and fifth was Nate Monahan.
FRONTIER AUTO DISMANTLERS Pure Stocks Starting on the pole was Brad Alward with Billy Smith on the outside and on the green, Smith was able to grab the early lead and hold it for the first three laps. Working his way up the field was Kyle Rothwell and he took the lead on lap four. The only caution period in the run was for Rothwell, as he had a leak in a transmission line and it spilled onto his exhaust pipe, causing a mild fire under the car. He was stopped on the backstretch by the exit of the pits, the fire was put out and he was allowed to have his spot back. After that, it was clean and green the rest of the way and the only challenge for Rothwell was from Leroy Buscumb and Sam Iftody. Iftody pulled off the track on the last lap with engine problems as he was running slower and slower each lap after the caution and Buscomb didn’t have anything for Rothwell, so Rothwell picked up his third win of 2012, also extending his points lead over Buscumb. Buscumb held on for second with Jackie Giancola third. Fourth was Alward with Smith in fifth. Heat winners were Buscumb and Iftody.
