Casella, Rouse and Peters Collect Topless Night Wins

Port Colborne,ON by Les Mawson(humberstonepr@yahoo.ca): A near capacity crowd showed up for “Topless Night” at the New Humberstone Speedway. It was presented by Peters Excavating and they were rewarded with the most competitive racing of the summer. There were two new winners for 2012 and the repeat victors had not seen Victory Lane in quite some time.

ONTARIO TOPLESS SPRINTS: 20 laps; Competitors came as near as Port Colborne and as far away as West Virginia and Ohio to race tonight at the speedway. Starting on the front row were a couple of the long haul drivers from Ontario, namely John Watson from St. Thomas and the true definition of the “grizzled veteran”, “the “Joyceville Jet”, Rick Wilson. On the drop of the green flags, it was Wilson with the early lead coming out of turn two with Watson right behind him. These two had a dog fight for the lead for the first half of the race until Wilson spun, bringing out a caution flag. Prior to the Wilson spin, there were two other spins, the first one by Stan Zanchin and the other by former Pro 4 Truck racer Scott Sherk. On the restart for Wilson, the longest hauler of the night, Mark Casella from Weirton, West Virginia, took over the lead and then hold off all challengers for the rest of the run, surviving another two yellow flag periods. At the finish it was Casella for the win, Watson was second and the ageless Dick Mahoney third. Recovering nicely for fourth was Wilson, beating out his daughter April Wilson who wound up fifth. Heat winners were Mike Galadja from Fenton, Michigan and Watson.

In the COSCO HAULAGE DIRTcar Sportsman 25 lap feature, Starting on the front row was the youngster Travis Miller with veteran Greg Rauscher along side him. On the start, Miller took the early lead and held it for the first lap, surviving the first caution for a crash between Matt Sharpe and Larry Czinege Jr. On the first restart, Dave Flannigan Jr. wrestled the lead away from Miller and he held it for the next ten laps, holding off a very determined Brad Rouse and surviving two yellow flags for spins by Mark Chiddy, who was not having a good night. On lap 11 restart, Gary Lindberg, who was running in the top five at the time, suddenly slowed going through turns one and two, bringing out caution number four. On this restart Rouse took the lead and held it the rest of the way, surviving a double last lap caution for first off, a crash between Chiddy, Rauscher and Austin Wood. On this restart, the back of the pack tried to get going before the front of the field, which led to a lot of bumper banging and Jeff Armstrong stalled in the middle of the back stretch. The last restart was also exciting as Cody Mcpherson, who was running in the top five, had his left rear tire going flat and didn’t want to lose too many spots changing it, slid all the way back to the twelfth position. At the finish, it was Rouse picking up his second win of 2012, Flannigan was second and B J Willard third. Fourth was Greg Panunte and fifth was Adam Hilton. Heat winners were Lindberg, Sharpe and Flannigan.

For the PETERS EXCAVATING FASTRAK Late Models 20 lap event, Starting on the pole was Don Spiece with Paul Milligan on the outside and on the drop of the green, Spiece took the early lead and held it for the first two laps, which was enough time for a very hungry Darren Peters to dispose of the cars ahead of him and then take the lead away from Spiece. With Peters running off with the lead, all the action was for the top five with Tim Gillespie, Adam Ferri and Ed Carley all battling for the second spot along with invader Paul Grigsby, here for the first time in 2012. Near the finish, Gillespie would drop out of the race with unspecified problems, leaving Ferri,Carley and Grigsby to battle with with Spiece. A last lap yellow for a spin by Jorden Peters did nothing to change up the order and so it was D. Peters for the win, his first in almost a month, second was Spiece with Ferri in third. Fourth was Carley and Grigsby was fifth. Heat winners were Grigsby and D. Peters.

J C AUTO Street Stocks had their 20 lap main, and starting on the pole after all his problems from last week was Barry Blanchard with Jordan Fidler along side and on the start, it was Blanchard taking the early lead and holding it for the first three laps. Moving smartly from his eighth starting spot was Kenny Sargent, taking over the lead on the fourth lap. With no yellow flags to bunch up the field, Sargent had an easy time picking up his third win in as many visits here in 2012. All the action was for the other top spots with Blanchard, Paul Reichel, Chris Crawford, Jason Fontaine and Chris Duchesne battling with Steve Robison. Duchesne would drop out of the fight with a flat right rear tire while Fontaine would also fall back with a flat left front tire. At the finish it was Sargent picking up his third straight win of 2012 with Reichel second and Crawford third. Fourth was Robison and fifth was Blanchard. Heat winners were Reichel and Duchesne.

WEEKEND MOTORSPORTS Mini Stocks:15 laps; On the front row it was Jay Pietz with Greg Wilson along side and on the drop of the green, Pietz would grab the early lead and hold it for the first two laps. Following Pietz was the rookie Steve Vanderzanden in the Dave Small Mustang and he took over the point on lap three. Once again, with no yellows to bunch up the field, Vanderzanden was having a fairly easy time holding off his competitors but not as much with his racer, as it was showing tire smoke coming off of the right rear every time he would get on the gas pedal. Also with no yellows, all the action was for spots in the top five with Brandon Iudiciani, Kyle Pelrine,Nate Monahan and Jocelyne Wiley running door handle to door handle for laps eight through eleven until Wiley had problems and went pitside. At the finish, it Was Vanderzanden picking up his first win of his career with Iudiciani second and Pelrine third. Fourth was Monahan and fifth was Tyler Lafantasie. It was a very proud grandfather Harry Vanderzanden, who was inducted onto to Merrittville Speedway’s Wall of Fame last week, standing beside Steve in Victory Lane. Heat winners were Pietz and Pelrine.

NIAGARA AUTO SALES Pro 4 Trucks:15 laps; Starting on the pole was Hilary Haegens with rookie Colton Ledingham beside her and on the drop of the green, Haegens wasted no time taking the top spot. Yet once again, there were no cautions in this run and again, it left all the excitement to be behind the leader. It was Lee Sleight, Mike Toovey, Adam Nicholls and “the Flyin’ Frenchman” Andy Imbeault all duking it out for the second spot and after 15 laps, it was Haegens picking up her third win of 2012, second was Toovey and third was Sleight. Fourth was Nicholls and fifth was Imbeault. Heat winners were Haegens and Imbeault.

FRONTIER AUTO DISMANTLERS Pure Stocks:15 laps; On the pole was Brad Alward with Mike Greene outside of him. On the drop of the green, Greene grabbed the early lead and held it for the first three laps. Battling his way up from his third row starting spot, Brad”the Hammer” Booker took over the lead on lap four and was never headed after that. All the action was behind Booker with Oliver Larocque and Kyle Tomaski having a good battle along with Kyle Rothwell and Leroy Buscumb. At the finish, it was Booker taking home his first win of 2012 and his first win in the class, Larocque was second and Tomaski was third, fourth was Rothwell and fifth was Buscumb.Heat winners were Greene and Booker.
