Port Colborne,ON by Les Mawson
On a night that looked like it was going to rain any second, the New Humberstone Speedway was able to get all six division features completed and everybody that wanted to get their favourite drivers autograph and picture.
The Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsmen had a pair of young drivers starting on the front row, namely second generation driver Adam Hilton and third generation Austin Wood.On the start, Hilton took the early lead but was slowed almost immediately for a spin on the front stretch .Hilton then stayed out front after the restart and was building a good lead, until another yellow flag for another spinner. This put Greg Panunte right beside Hilton for the restart and Panunte wasted no time to jump into the lead.Even with a last lap caution for Dave Flanagan,Jr wasn’t enough for anybody to get close to Panunte and he was able to bring home the win.The top five were Panunte the winner,Hilton was second,Adam Leslie with a fine run was third,Gary Lindberg was fourth and Jeff Armstrong was fifth.Heat winners were Hilton and Leslie.
The Peters Excavating FASTRAK Late Models had a pair of veterans in anything but a late model sharing the front row, namely Don Spiece and Kenny Winfield. On the drop of the green,Spiece had the jump on the field, but was quickly gobbled up by division sponsor Darren Peters.Spiece showed some early speed, staying close to Peters until he got out of shape coming out of turn 2 on lap 6,bringing out a yellow flag. This allowed Paul Milligan, who had started tail, to come alongside Peters for the restart and give Peters a good run for the money for the next few laps.Peters showed no mercy though and held on for the win. The real dogfight was for second, with Milligan holding off the other red and yellow car of Jordan Peters until lap 18.Your top five were D.Peters for the win,J. Peters second,Milligan with the best run of the year for him, third,Zack Carley fourth and Tim Gillespie fifth.Heat winners were Spiece and Winfield.
The JC Auto Street Stocks also had a pair of young guns on the front row, namely Jordan Fidler and Shawn Wilson. On the start,Fidler raced out to the early lead with Jason Fontaine right behind him. Fidler was able to hold off Fontaine for the first three laps, but then “The Fonz” got around him coming off of turn 4.Billy Bleich,Jr. soon came up from his third row starting spot and got by Fidler and set his sights on Fontaine.Bleich soon caught up to Fontaine, setting up a dog fight that lasted for the rest of the race. On lap 17,Bleich got by Fontaine, but Fontaine was giving up that easily, staying with Bleich right up until the last lap.Trying to get the lead back,Fontaine got into Bleich and wound up getting a flat on the right front tire and slid high into turns 3 and 4,dropping him back into fifth spot. The top five were Bleich for the win,Fidler with probably the best run of his young career second,Barry Blanchard third,Paul Reichel fourth and Fontaine fifth.Heat winners were Bleich and Fontaine.
The Weekend Motorsports Mini Stocks started out with Rob Overholt and Nate Monahan up front and Monahan wasted no time in setting the early pace, taking the lead that he would not relinquish for the rest of the race.Overholt kept up with Monahan for the whole race but couldn’t find the horses to get by Monahan.Meanwhile, back in the pack,Brandon Iuduiciani and Kyle Pelrine were having a good battle for third and fourth alomg with Tyler Lafantaisie. This race went caution free so Overholt didn’t have the chance to maybe outrace Monahan on a restart. At the finish, the top five were Monahan with his first win of his career,Overholt second,Iuduciani third,Pelrine fourth and Lafantaisie fifth.the lone heat winner was Overholt.
The Niagara Auto Sales Pro 4 trucks had Danny Wurster on the pole with Mike Toovey beside him.On the start, just like the minis, the outside pole-sitter got the jump on the pole sitter and wound up in the lead. This time,it was Toovey taking the lead and holding off all comers. All the action was behind him with Greg Haegens battling with the grizzled veteran Andy Imbeault along with Wurster and Hilary Haegens.Again, with no cautions,Greg had no chance of maybe out racing Toovey on a restart. At the finish, with another first time career winner,it was Toovey, with Greg Haegens second,Imbeault third,Wurster fourth, and Hilary Haegens fifth.Heat winners were Hilary Haegens and Adam Nicholls.
The Frontier Auto Dismantlers Pure Stocks Started out with a pair of unrelated Smiths on the front row,Mason on the pole and Billy on the outside.Mason took the early lead but lost the lead on the restart for a spin by Kyle Rothwell on the backstretch.Billy then showed the way for the next five laps until Rothwell made his way back through the field and got by him, bringing Sam Iftody along with him. This set up a real battle with the veteran Iftody and the rookie Rothwell, with the pair of them swapping the lead back and forth for the last few laps.Coming up to the finish,Iftody was leading but Rothwell tried to use the “chrome horn” to get around him but to no avail.Your top five were Iftody for his second win of the season,Rothwell second,Leroy Buscumb third,Jon Vineski fourth and Kyle Tomaski fifth.Heat winners were B. Smith and Vineski.
